Throughout the centuries artists and designers from every culture have created chess sets, though with varying degrees of success. While many of the designs were attractive as works of art they often did not function well as chess sets. Some were of an inappropriate size, some absurdly top heavy, while others the pieces were only identifiable by virtue of the square they were placed on at the start of the game.

We have gone back to basics to create pieces which are clean, contemporary, attractive, well proportioned and most of all - funtional. Every piece is hand made (there are no copy machines in this workshop) and the timbers we use are the real thing, not cheap woods stained or laquered. The designs have been done to make the pieces easily identifiable, a pleasure to handle and allow the beauty of the wood to show through.

We offer three sets which we call ROUND, SQUARE and SHAPED. What is (we think) unique is that each half of the set is bought separately. Normally you only get what the maker offers but with us you get the ability to contribute to the look of your set and to create the one which fits your personal taste. If you want the ROUND set in ebony and sycamore, that is exactly what you order. However, if you want the 'black' side to be rosewood from the ROUND set and the 'white' side also from rosewood, but from the SQUARE set then that is what you will get.

Take care when ordering to make sure that you have ordered the whole set and not just half one!!
