In 1480 William Caxton published his book 'The Game and Playe of
Chess' and as far as we know the set drawn in that work has never
been commercially available until now. What we have attempted to
do is produce the set which we believe you would have got if you
ordered one 500 years ago. The set comes with extra Queens as standard.
Because we wanted to produce an authentic set we have used the
same tools and techiniques as would have been used at the time,
individually turning and carving each piece by hand.
We decided early on that the most likely timbers which would have
been used were English Oak and English Walnut, so these have become
our standard timbers. We also supply European Boxwood as an alternative
white side, and Ebony, fumed English Oak and Purpleheart as alternative
black pieces. If you would like it made in timbers of your own choice
then let us know.
